Welcome

Housed at Webster University in St. Louis, MO, the SCOTS lab appreciates the social aspects of traumatic events and their recovery. Our goal is to find ways we can better serve trauma survivors, keep them connected or welcome them back into community, and promote posttraumatic growth.

Dear visitor

The actions of the current United States government have left many of us unnerved. Even if a president’s intentions are never enacted, their written and voiced existence alone serve as symbols of institutional betrayal. The content of many of these orders is divorced from scientific reality and basic compassion for our neighbors.

The SCOTS Lab recognizes these harms and stands in solidarity with those targeted. Unfortunately, we are entering an era of significant betrayal by our governmental figures. At the same time, we, as global citizens who value science and doing right by all, can enact the courage that rectifies it. In the words of Dr. Andrew Solomon, “There's always somebody who wants to confiscate our humanity. And there are always stories that restore it. If we live out loud, we can trounce the hatred, and expand everyone's lives.”

Dr. Bruce has curated mental health resources, including what evidence-based treatment is and how to find such providers. She cannot reply to requests for her clinical services, but this site can serve as a springboard for locating similar clinicians. Beyond formal psychotherapy, our mental health is buoyed by two main principles: being in community, and being true to ourselves.

Hate has no home here, and we aren’t going anywhere.
